Australia: Australian beer and wine giant, Foster’s Group Limited (FGL), announced on February 8 a 0.9% decline in net profit to A$757 million (US$580 million; €451 million) for the six months ended 31 December 2004, as sales dropped 10 %. Forster’s blamed a competitive pricing environment on its decline in net profit. The negative result occurred despite the company benefiting from A$461.7 million in significant items relating to divestment of the Lensworth Group and the disposal of its residual 10% investment in the Australian Leisure & Hospitality Group. Sales fell to A$2.03 billion (US$1.55 billion; €1.21 billion) from A$2.26 billion (US$1.73 billion; €1.35 billion) due mainly to overseas price wars. Foster's owns brands including the well-known Shanghai Beer and Guangming beers in China. Its wine labels include Australia's Wolf Blass and Greg Norman Estates, and California's Beringer and Stags' Leap. It also has wine labels in Italy and New Zealand. The result included a net one-time gain of A$461.7 million, mainly related to the A$454.2 million gain on the sale of Foster's Lensworth property business. Net profit in the previous first half was bolstered by a one-time gain of A$464.3 million, mainly relating to Foster's sale of its pubs and gaming business. Excluding one-time items, Foster's reported a net profit of A$295.3 million (US$226 million; €175.96 million) in the first half, down from A$299.8 million (US$230 million; €179.07 million) in the same period last year. "Overall, I am very pleased with the group's financial performance for the first half of fiscal 2005 and remain confident that Foster's is well placed to deliver significantly enhanced financial returns for shareholders," Chief Executive Trevor O'Hoy said. "With the major operational reviews now behind us, Foster's is at the front end of a sustained period of strong organic growth," he said. One of the few positives for the company was its EPS figure, which rose 5.3% to 37.8c per share due to a 6% reduction in share capital from Foster’s buy-back activity during the period. The group also increased its fully franked interim dividend by 5.7% to 9.25c per security. Of the better divisional operations, Foster’s highlighted Carlton & United Beverages’ growth in revenue, earnings and margins. However, trading conditions in the key markets for Foster’s Brewing International operations were very competitive. The group said Foster’s Brewing International volumes declined 1.2%, primarily driven by aggressive competitor pricing activity in the UK off trade during the peak Christmas period. The profit result comes hot on the heels’ of Foster’s A$4.17 per share, A$3.6 billion offer for local wine group Southcorp Limited (SRP)...more info

United Kingdom: Pubs, clubs and other drinking venues in England and Wales can apply to stay open 24 hours a day under new laws that come into effect Monday, February 7, according to Associated Press. Currently, many British drinkers imbibe as much as they can as quickly as they can before pubs shut at 11 p.m. Then heavy drinkers all stumble into the streets at the same time, often leading to fights and other drunken misbehaviour. The government says the new laws will help curb the problem because people will drink in a more relaxed manner and leave at different times. Although establishments can apply for the extended licences starting Monday, February 7, the new hours won't come into effect in England and Wales until November. Scotland is conducting its own review of licensing laws. Opposition politicians and many newspapers have criticized the new regulations, saying that 24-hour drinking will add to Britain's culture of boozy behavior. But culture secretary Tessa Jowell defended the plans, saying few pubs are expected to open around the clock. Although licenced premises can apply to stay open for any time during a 24-hour period, local authorities can limit the hours if nearby residents or the police raise objections. "We are not, and never have, promoted 24-hour drinking - that is a myth," Jowell said. "We are promoting flexible hours to reduce violence at last orders. "This will put a long-needed end to the double madness of people gulping two or three rounds of drinks to beat last orders and then all being chucked out at the same time," she said. Jowell said the new laws also give police more power to close down premises where the licencees are not complying with their conditions. A recent poll by the British Beer and Pub Association, which represents more than 30,500 pubs and bars, found that none intended to open for 24 hours, the government said. "The vast majority of people should be treated like the adults they are. It is ridiculous that the government should deny the entire population the right to a drink after 11 p.m.," Jowell said.

Barley News

Canada: For 2005-06, barley production is forecast by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) to decrease by 8% from 2004-05 to 12.2 million tonnes, due to lower yields and area, AAFC published on February 7. Farmers are expected to reduce area seeded to barley by 4% due to large carry-in stocks and low expected prices, relative to other grains and oil seeds. Average yields are expected to decrease from 3.3 t/ha to about 3.0 t/ha, AAFC said on January 14. Total supplies, however, are expected to rise slightly from 2004-2005 to 15.4 million tonnes, due to higher carry-in stocks. Domestic use is forecast to increase by 5% due to higher feed demand. Exports are projected to increase significantly, to 2.5 million tonnes, assuming increased supplies of malting quality barley. AAFC said on January 14 that the quality of the 2004-2005 barley crops is much below normal and the selection rate for malting barley is estimated to have dropped sharply, due to sprout and frost damage and high screenings. Exports of malting barley for 2005-2006 are expected to increase to 1.1 million tonnes from an estimated 0.6 million tonnes in 2004-2005. Import demand is expected to improve in the US for six-row designated barley and remain strong in China for two-row varieties. Carry-out stocks are expected to fall to 2.4 million tonnes, from 3.2 million tonnes in 2004-2005. Carry-out stocks are expected to drop to 3.1 million tonnes. Off-Board feed barley prices are forecast at C$120/t, C$10/t higher than for 2004-05. CWB pool returns for feed barley are forecast by AAFC to increase slightly from 2004-05. CWB pool returns for Special Select Two Row designated barley are forecast by AAFC at C$185/t, vs the Jan. PRO of C$178/t for 2004-05, due mainly to higher world coarse grain prices.
