The Turkish brewer Efes Breweries International N.V (EBI), purchased majority stake in Serbian brewer Pancevo, based outside Belgrade, Turks.us reported on August 16. Turkish brewer purchased 63 % of Pancevo for $6.5 million cash, and became the first international brewer investing in Serbia, said the source. The money will be invested in product quality and technical infrastructure. Efes said that the number of countries the company is involved rose to six after Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Moldova and Kazakhstan. Pancevo produces and sells three brandnames ''Weifert'', ''Karsten'' and ''Standart'' in Serbia. Efes said: “In Serbia, the whole market is dominated by domestic producers and more than 470 million litres of beer was sold in 2002 and per capita beer consumption is around 58 liters.” Pancevo is expected to reach 50 % capacity utilization rate this year, and raise production capacity with $10 million investment from its annual 40 million liters capacity, Efes said. Efes purchased 63 % of Pancevo for $6.5 million, and became the first international brewer investing in Serbia. On August 6 the Istanbul Stock Exchange announced that Efes acquired the Russian Amstar Brewery, thanks to a US$25m loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Oetker, the German food group, intends to buy 4.36% of the German brewer, Radeberger Gruppe AG. Now Oetker owns 95.64% of Radeberger. After the acquisition Oetker will become the full owner of Radeberger Gruppe AG. “The buyout will give Radeberger greater financial freedom as listed companies need to hold shareholders' meetings to ratify decisions,” the brewer's CEO, Ullrich Kallmeyer, said. Radeberger, Germany's third largest brewer, recorded sales of €904m (US$1,015m) in 2002, up 6.5% from 2001.

Brazil, São Paulo – the police of São Paulo retakes searches of assassins of the owner of Schincariol Brewery this morning. The police is searching the assassins of the 60 years old entrepreneur Jose Nelson Schincariol. Jose Nelson Schincariol was the owner of the Schincariol brewery. He was killed in the garage of his house in Itu yesterday at night when arriving home at 11 PM. The reason of the crime is still unknown. Nothing belonging to Jose Nelson was stolen. The Schincariol Brewery was created in 1939 and now it owns six plants in Brazil.

3. Malt News

The biggest Russian brewer Baltika said on August 15 that its malting plant in Tula would be able to purchase barley to the amount of US$10 million per year. Thus Baltika will contribute to the agricultural development in Tula, said the company. A meeting was held on August 15 regarding the schedule and requirements for the barley of crop 2003-2004. The malting plant in Tula will need about 11 thousand tonnes of high quality malting barley per month. Baltika invested about US$32 million in its malting plant in Tula and plans to open it in the second half of 2004. The company is forecasting the pay-back period to be 6-9 years, which depends on the prices for raw materials.

4. Barley News

Byelorussia’s president Alexander Lukashenko, set to the government the problem to produce 70 thousand tons of Byelorussian malting barley, RIA News has reported recently. “No one will import barley and we will drink beer made out of our barley,” said Lukashenko. However, according to analysts, now the Byelorussian barley doesn’t suit the qualities for brewing industry.

The EU production of barley will decrease 1.5% in 2003 versus 2002, according to Statégie Grains. It is forecasting the EU will output about 47 million tonnes of barley in 2003, while in 2002 it output 47.7 million tonnes of barley.
