2. Brewery News
The world's second-biggest brewer, SABMiller Plc, reported profit growth for the first five months of its financial year on September 29. The company said: “Group financial performance in the five-month period to 31 August 2003 was strong, with the European, South African and Africa and Asian businesses each delivering good earnings growth. In North and Central America the performance of our businesses has been in line with our previously announced expectations.”
Organic volume growth in lager was almost 4% across the Group. In Europe, organic volume was up 8% driven primarily by a strong performance in Russia and higher sales in Czech compared to the same period in the prior year, when sales were affected by the severe flooding. Satisfactory progress is being made with integrating the recent Peroni acquisition into the Group.
The Africa and Asia business delivered a 3% increase in organic volume growth over the prior year despite the negative impact of SARS in China and economic turmoil in Zimbabwe. The East African restructuring initiatives have enhanced the performance of our operation in this region.
In South Africa, beer volumes have continued to grow, and for the period to mid-September were up by 2.5% on the prior year after adjusting for the timing of Easter. Beer continues to gain share of the total liquor market at the expense of wine and spirits...more info
Turkish company Efes Beverage International will increase its turnover in Russia up to U$200 million in 2003, Selih Mavish, CEO of Moscow Efes Brewery ZAO announced in a statement. He said the turnover of Efes in Russia would increase 25% in 2003 against last year, without taking into account the purchasing of Ufa-based brewery Amstar in August this year. Mavish noticed that every year the volumes of beer production at Moscow Efes increase twice faster than the Russian brewing industry. He is forecasting Efes will increase beer output in Russia by 14% this year in comparison with 2002; while Russian beer market will increase 7%. Mavish said Efes in Russia has a production capacity of about 5.2 million hl per year. He noticed that this capacity is not enough for Efes and next year the company might purchase an enterprise in the Far East with the production capacity of 1 million hl per annum or might build a brewery if their wouldn’t be any reasonable offer.
The largest Czech brewer Plzensky Prazdroj approved on September 30 to pay 1.96 billion Czech crowns ($71.85 million) in dividends, with its main owner SABMiller getting nearly all of it, Reuters reported. Prazdroj, the maker of Pilsner Urquell and the largest brewer in the beer-loving Czech Republic, posted a net profit of 1.64 billion crowns during the last fiscal year when it sold 9 million hectolitres of beer. The dividend is a combination of last year's entire profit and retained profits from past years, the company said in a statement. "Our long-term capital investment programme will continue to increase our production capacity," Prazdroj Chairman Steve Woodward said in the statement. Prazdroj paid an extraordinary dividend equal to the same amount in March. Prazdroj's fiscal year ends in March. SABMiller holds a 97.6 % stake in the unit. It paid $629 million for the brewer through two instalments since 1999 when it first bought into the firm.
SUN Interbrew Ltd, a brewing company of Russia and Ukraine announced positive tendencies for the second quarter of 2003. Company’s net profit increased 150% up to EUR 9 Million versus the same period last year, while EBITDA increased 37.7% up to EUR 36.5 million. Company’s operating profit increased 42.8% up to EUR 20.7 million. Sun Interbrew produced about 5 million hl of beer in the second quarter of the year, 38.6% more versus the same period last year.
In Russia sales volumes of the company increased 38% up to 3.2 million hl of beer versus the second quarter last year. That increased the company’s market share from 11.9% in the second quarter of 2002 to 15.2% in the second quarter of 2003. Meanwhile Russian beer market increased only 8%.
SUN Interbrew increased its sales volumes in Ukraine by 39%. Market share of the company in Ukraine increased from 30.6% to 33.8%.
SUN Interbrew Limited is the second largest brewer in Russia and the largest brewer in Ukraine. The company is a strategic partnership between Interbrew, one of the largest brewers in the world, and the SUN Group, operating in the region since 1958, and in the beer sector of Russia and CIS since the beginning of 1990s. The company's main brands are Stella Artois®, Staropramen®, Klinskoye®, Sibirskaya Korona®, and Tolstiak® in Russia, and Stella Artois®, Chernigivske®, Rogan®, Taller® and Yantar® in Ukraine. SUN Interbrew is a public company registered in Jersey, whose shares are listed and traded on the Luxembourg, Frankfurt and Berlin exchanges.

Chinese barley crop for 2003 looks like a total of 1.6 million tonnes, while in 2002 it was only 1.9 million tonnes. Meanwhile Chinese malting barley crop could reach 1.01 million tonnes in 2003 versus 1.33 million tonnes in 2002. And that is after heavy losses in Hei Long Jiang and Jiang Su, where the crop of malting barley decreased from 350 thousand tonnes in 2002 to 150 thousand tonnes in 2003 each. Local maltsters will use all available supplies. Import of barley in July 2002/June 2003 was 2.023 million tonnes, of which 1.335 million tonnes from Australia, 0.543 million tonnes from France and only 0.123 million tonnes from Canada. Total needs of malting barley in 2003 are seen at 3 million tonnes, as Chinese brewers have reduced the malt percentage in beer as much as possible. There has been no market for imported barley since a few months.
