E-Malt.com News article: Romania: Ursus Breweries has new head

SABMiller plc said on March, 22 that Gary Whitlie (53) is taking over the position of President of its subsidiary Ursus Breweries, the leader of the beer market in Romania, as of June 2010.

The company’s previous President, Stephan Maria Weber, resigned in January for personal reasons.

Mr. Whitlie has worked for the SABMiller Group for the past 26 years, in a variety of senior financial positions as well as managing three business entities. He was the General Manager of Chamdor Breweries in South Africa, he set up and led Miller Brands, SABMiller's operating company in the United Kingdom and since October 2008 he is the Managing Director of Dreher Breweries in Hungary.

"After setting up a successful operating company in a very competitive beer market like the UK and leading one of the finest beer companies in Hungary, I am very aware of the fact that passionate people build strong and competitive brands and I know that this is part of a successful recipe. Romania comes with great challenges, taking into account the recent evolution of the beer market, but I am fortunate to work with great professionals here and I know that we have a remarkable portfolio of leading beer brands," he said.
