Kenya’s government has banned the sale of a popular German beer brand from the Kenyan market, The Star reported on June 13.

In a circular, the Health ministry termed Burg Premium Extra Lager as "unfit for human consumption" and called for its withdrawal from the market.

Director of public health Kepha Ombacho said the beer brand does not have an expiry date, which is against the law.

“The alcoholic beverage that is brewed in Germany contravenes the provisions of the foods, drugs and chemical substances act,” he said.

Ombacho directed health officers in the country to confiscate the beer from the market and take legal action against anyone selling it.

He said the ministry is keen to address under-quality imported food and drinks in the country.

“The ministry will release names of more alcoholic drinks that do not meet the set standards in due course,” Ombacho said.
