Brewery news

Wheeling Brewing Company will soon be celebrating its grand opening. Formerly known as Basement Brewery for the last two years, the company is in the process of renovating their new location at Centre Market and plans to have everything up and running sometime in late September or early October, Columbus CEO reports.

Wheeling Brewing Company CEO Chad Hill explained that once the business is open, it will function as a brewing pub as well as a restaurant.

"We're going to incorporate a lot of local products and produce. We've been making a lot of partnerships with local farmers, and our beer is also going to have local hops in it," Hill said. "We plan on having six beers on tap at all times, with one guest beer."

Hill explained that the company plans to have a rotating menu of both beer and food. Seasonal beers will be featured, and the restaurant side of the business will offer rotating specials, such as brick oven pizza and cedar-roasted salmon.

Some of the beers made by Wheeling Brewing Company including Nail City Porter - a beer that took first place in the competition at the Coal Country Beer Festival - McColloch's Wheat, Moon Dog IPA and Old Reymann's Ale, which is named after an old brewing company of Wheeling.

Hill stressed that he is not alone in his endeavors to brew. While he handles a majority of the paperwork for the company, other individuals have also played integral roles up to this point. Dave Cornett acts as the company's chief financial officer, James Schulte serves as the chief design officer and Josh Clarke, who has worked with Magic Hat Brewing Company of Vermont and the Vermont Pub and Brewery, serves as the chief operations officer and brewmaster.

Hill explained that Wheeling Brewing Company has many plans to expand the business in the future as well. In the first year, their beer will be available at choice locations in Wheeling - including Metropolitan Citi Grill, Generations Pub and Market Vines, to name a few - in addition to being on tap at locations in Morgantown. As the business steadily grows, Hill would like to see the company's beer made available throughout West Virginia and eventually Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland as well.

"Our goal as a company and a small business is to not only promote our product, but also to promote other small businesses. Where we are opening, there are several other small businesses that we'll work alongside very closely with events and products that we're going to display in our brewery," Hill said.

"Our idea is going to be a New York City loft-style bar with exposed brick and repurposed wood and timber from local buildings," he said, explaining that the brewery will also display local products and artwork.

Company representatives will be present at three upcoming promotional events - Brew Skies on July 25 and 26, Mountaineer Brew Festival on August 16 and the Wheeling Wine and Jazz Festival on August 24 - to increase their exposure before their opening in the fall.

"We want this as a representation of Wheeling, to help us get Wheeling back on the map in the brewing industry," Hill said. "
