| E-Malt.com News article: USA, MA: Castle Island Brewing Co. adding capacity just seven months after opening
Just seven months after opening, Castle Island Brewing Co. is already adding capacity to keep up with increasing demand in the market, Brewbound.com reported on July 18.
The company’s core beers — Candlepin and Keeper — have become mainstays amongst Greater Boston retailers, and are now available in over 650 locations. Growth for both products prompted the brewery to add three new cellar tanks, bringing production capacity to more than 9,000 barrels annually, a 50 percent increase.
“We have been flat out the past few months. We’ve been emptying tanks and refilling them the same day,” said Castle Island President, Adam Romanow. “This is great for capacity utilization, but we’re still running only one shift and that pace is difficult to keep up for long.”
Romanow says the company’s ranks have also grown to keep up with the volume, and Castle Island now employs 16 people, a sharp increase from the four-person team they launched with in December of 2015.
This expansion comes well in advance of what Romanow had initially planned. The company had anticipated adding more tanks before the end of the year. But with current lead times on brewing equipment eclipsing four months, the immediate need for more space pushed Romanow into ordering tanks from a new supplier that regularly stocks a small number of tanks this large.
“There’s a premium price for in-stock tanks,” Romanow noted, “but the opportunity cost of not being able to grow is much more expensive.”
Juice Patrol, a new pale ale from Castle Island Brewing Co., prominently features Cascade and Centennial hops. Juice Patrol was released at the brewery only on Thursday, July 21.
The new capacity will also allow the brewery to continue to develop new beers outside of the core lineup. Kicking off this effort is Juice Patrol, a new Pale Ale featuring Centennial and Cascade hops that clocks in at 7 percent alcohol by volume. This new beer follows on the heels of several other limited releases from Castle Island, including Vern – a Wheat IPA with Mosaic hops – as well as Causeway and Big Ern, a pair of double IPAs that, to this date, remain the brewery’s most highly rated and sought after beers. Castle Island plans to release Juice Patrol at the brewery only on Thursday, July 21.
Located off Route 1, at 31 Astor Ave. in Norwood, Mass., Castle Island is currently operating on limited public visiting hours. The brewery is open for tastings, tours and purchases on Thursdays and Fridays from 3:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M and Saturdays from 12:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
