Brewery news

Celebrating his 30th birthday was the second most fun thing Ken Srubinski did on Friday, May 3, GreaterBayShore reported.

The first was opening Secatogue Brewing Co. in his hometown of West Islip with his family.

“It has been a long time coming,” said Ken, who originally planned on opening two years ago before hitting a series of delays. “It is great and rewarding to finally be open.”

Ken, the head brewer, is running the new South Shore brewery with his wife and high school sweetheart, Katie, his two brothers, Tom and Zach, among other family members.

The brewery, located at 375 Union Boulevard, is 4,300 square feet and holds about 100 people.

Perfect location for the Srubinksis, who all live minutes away.

“My ride to work now is five minutes on a busy day,” said Tom, laughing.

Secatogue Brewing Co. — named after the former Native American tribe that used to occupy the area — had six beers on tap opening weekend.

Among them included Pink Hibiscus IPA, an early fan favorite, as well as New England-styled IPAs, a blonde ale, and witbier.

“We’re hoping everyone loves our beer because we got a lot of things planned and a lot more beer to come,” said Ken.

Going forward, the West Islip brewery will be open on Fridays from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays from noon to 10 p.m., and Sundays noon to 6 p.m.

As the summer progresses, more hours, and, of course, beers will be added on tap.
