E-Malt.com News article: USA, MI: Black Lotus Brewing Company posts listing on Facebook inviting inquiries for sale
Brewery news

Black Lotus Brewing Company appears to be hunting for a new owner. The popular Clawson-based brewery posted a listing to Facebook in late-August inviting inquiries for the sale of an unnamed “award-winning” Oakland County brewpub established in 2006, Eater Detroit reported on September 17.

The listing on BizBuySell through real estate firm Zak & Associates advertises “a well located, very popular brewery” with a seven-barrel brewing capacity for $450,000. The brewery’s gross revenue is listed as $1,400,000 with a rental payment of $7,900 per month. The lease on the 5,000-square-foot building is scheduled to expire on December 31, 2019.

Management for Black Lotus did not respond to multiple requests for comment and a realtor representing the unidentified brewery declined to disclose any information regarding the client, stating that the owner’s desire for a confidential sale. However, people with knowledge of the sale confirm that the brewpub in question is Black Lotus.

The reasons for the sale weren’t immediately available. Black Lotus holds a Class C liquor license as well as a brew pub license and a specially designated merchant license. However, Michigan Liquor Licensing Commision confirm that the treasury has a levy against the business for sales tax.

Black Lotus was founded in September 2006 by partners Mark Harper, Michael Allan, and Jodi Allan during a time when Clawson’s downtown area was in the midst of an economic downturn. The brewery became a popular spot for live music, beer, and pub food as the surrounding district attracted new restaurants, bars, and businesses.

While the brewery may be up for grabs, it’s continuing to operate with regular hours and a full menu.
