UK’s beer delivery workers said “cheers” on September 1 after their vote for strike action persuaded bosses to more than double a pay offer, the Morning Star reported.

Distribution firm GXO proposed a below-inflation 1.4 per cent rise to 1,000 draymen and women who distribute 40 per cent of the UK’s beer supplies to pubs across the country.

The workers, members of the Unite union, rejected the proposal and voted to strike for two days.

As a result, they will receive a 4 per cent increase.

Unite national officer for the drinks industry Joe Clarke said: “We regard this agreement as a significant victory for our members, given that the company had originally offered a paltry 1.4 per cent for this year.

“However, we wanted a pay rise that reflected the current cost of living and we have achieved that goal.

“It demonstrates what can be achieved when Unite members show determination and solidarity, backed up with a strong mandate for industrial action.”
