Brewery news

Heineken Ethiopia has introduced Desperados beer to the Ethiopian market through an investment close to 500 million birr, as the brewer expands its premium portfolio in the country, Birrmetrics reported on April 18.

The company launched the premium brand on Saturday at a gathering, where members of the management team stepped into an unexpected choreographed sequence during the unveiling, drawing attention at the centre of the event.

The managing director of Heineken Ethiopia, Bart De Keninck, told Birrmetrics during the launch program that the company invested "close to half a billion birr", mainly to acquire a flavouring machine.

The company said the initial focus will be on urban centres and nightlife venues, where demand for premium and differentiated beverages is rising.

Desperados carries an alcohol content of 5.9 percent and is positioned as a lager with a Latin-inspired profile built around agave spirit flavouring that gives it a tequila-like character. The formulation relies on agave-derived aromatic notes rather than traditional spirit content, designed to replicate a cocktail-style drinking experience.

Part of Heineken’s global portfolio, Desperados is among the brewer’s most widely distributed flavoured beers, available in more than 50 countries across Europe, Latin America, Africa and parts of Asia.

Europe remains its core market, with strong visibility in France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Poland, where it is commonly associated with urban nightlife consumption. Beyond Europe, the brand has expanded into Latin American markets, including Brazil, as well as selected African and Asian markets.

The brewer said the new product will be priced about five birr above Heineken, placing it slightly higher within the premium segment.

Ethiopia’s beer market has attracted sustained capital over the past decade, supported by population growth and urbanisation. Brewers have increasingly diversified beyond standard lagers to compete in higher-margin segments.

Heineken Ethiopia entered the Ethiopian market in 2011 through the acquisition of Harar and Bedele breweries. It later expanded its industrial footprint with the Kilinto Brewery near Addis Ababa, strengthening production capacity and proximity to urban demand centres. The company now operates a multi-site system across Kilinto, Harar and Bedele, and manages a portfolio of more than eight brands spanning mainstream, premium and non-alcoholic categories.
