Brewery news

Volksbank Brawo and its board member Heiner Arnoldi have designated a buyer for the insolvent Hofbrauhaus Wolters. According to a statement by the bank, the TCB group is slated to take over the Wolters brand family alongside other brand-related assets, Inside.Beer reported on October 2.

Production and bottling will transition into the TCB network, a move intended to preserve up to 40 jobs. This proposed deal favors the group over Privatbrauerei Wittingen, which had also submitted a comprehensive offer for the historic brewery that filed for insolvency in self-administration earlier this year.

The TCB group, led by founders Karsten Uhlmann and Mike Gärtner, produces around 7.4 million hectoliters annually across four locations. Primarily known as a major supplier of budget and private label beers for food retailers domestically and abroad, TCB also operates regional breweries. These include the former Holsten subsidiary Feldschlößchen in Dresden and the Gilde brewery in Hannover.

In addition to acquiring the brand rights, TCB's offer reportedly encompasses the brewery's real estate and machinery. Executives were recently seen at the Braunschweig site inspecting the equipment, notably the four-year-old dealcoholization plant and the returnable glass bottling line, which are expected to be relocated to the Gilde facility in Hannover as reported by inside-getraenke. Following the planned halt of brewing operations in Braunschweig by the end of the year, insider rumors suggest production could end as early as November.

The potential acquisition of the brewery real estate poses significant challenges. The neighboring site of the former Oettinger brewery, which was shut down nine months ago, remains unsold due to its strict commercial zoning. The Wolters property is further complicated by heritage-listed buildings and the looming threat of very high demolition and disposal costs.

The prospect of relocating the local Wolters brand to the rival city of Hannover has provoked widespread criticism in Braunschweig. Given the fierce historical rivalry, fans of the local football club Eintracht Braunschweig are particularly incensed, leading to calls for protests and petitions on platforms like Change.org. Furthermore, beverage wholesalers report that many local gastronomists are proactively seeking alternative beer suppliers, which could result in a substantial loss of market share for the brand before the takeover is finalized.

Faced with the public backlash, Volksbank Brawo issued a statement clarifying that the current transaction is only a planned project, contingent upon final agreements and necessary approvals. The bank emphasized that ongoing statements regarding job preservation, site utilization, production, and sponsorships merely reflect the current planning stage and do not represent binding guarantees.
