| E-Malt.com News article: Uganda: Uganda Breweries Ltd became one of the most eco-friendly companies
Uganda Breweries Ltd (UBL)’s effluent treatment plant has won the company recognition from environmental activists, Uganda’s media communicated on January 2.
The plant worth sh7b was installed recently to safeguard Lake Victoria from massive pollution, making UBL one of the most eco-friendly companies. It stands near the lake and cleans wastewater by removing organic residues that were being deposited in the world’s second largest fresh water body without any form of treatment.
Environmental Alert, a local NGO, at its annual environmental awards convened to reward outstanding companies and environmental activists, gave the brewers the award. Others that were awarded were Kiswa Primary School and the Advocates Coalition for Development and Environment.
Speaking at the awarding ceremony at Grand Imperial Hotel, Kampala, Fred Kafeero, the executive director of environmental Alert, said this would motivate environmentalists working to achieve sustainable use of nature.
Environmental Alert followed National environmental Management Authority in giving annual awards to excelling achievers in environmental management. NEMA rewarded UBL at the UN World environment Day for complying with environmental laws.
