Brewery news

Coors Brewing Company will supply more than $600,000 in medical supplies and equipment in Mexico through its sponsorship of Project C.U.R.E.’s First Ladies’ Luncheon, Business Wire reported March 10. Coors recently helped Project C.U.R.E. – a non-profit medical relief organization for more than 120 nations throughout the world – bring the First Lady of Mexico, Mrs. Margarita Zavala, to Denver to support efforts to increase emergency relief to people in areas of Mexico devastated by flooding this past fall.

According to Mauricio Cardenas, chief officer, Latin America and U.S. Multicultural Markets for Coors, the need is particularly great in Chiapas and Tabasco, where the medical supplies will be delivered. Extensive flooding in October and November of 2007 displaced approximately 2 million people in these states.

“Torrential rains caused 22 rivers to flood. Half a million homes were destroyed and thousands of residents were evacuated,” said First Lady of Mexico, Mrs. Margarita Zavala. “The devastation left nearly a million people homeless,” she added.

“Coors believes strongly in being a good neighbor – whether it is across the street or across the world,” Cardenas said. “Through our sponsorship of Project C.U.R.E.’s First Ladies’ Luncheon, we are able to help thousands who need help most in Mexico,” he added.

Coors has long been a sponsor of Project C.U.R.E. – through employee Days of Impact. Once per quarter, employee volunteers spend a day at the Project C.U.R.E. warehouse packing medical supplies and equipment for shipment anywhere in the world in need of emergency help and relief.

Most important, Cardenas said, is supporting the communities where we live, work and sell our beer. “The Latino community is very important to Coors and we have made it a priority to focus many of our volunteer and economic development efforts in Latino communities across the U.S.,” Cardenas said. He noted that Coors was the first company in the country to create an economic development pact aimed at increasing opportunities for Latino businesses and communities. He said that the company donates more than $6 million annually to more than 700 charitable organizations across the U.S.

“Volunteering is an important part of our culture. Our employees donated more than 60,000 hours in 2007,” Cardenas said. He added that the company supports such programs as Cena en el Barrio food basket program, San Sandos Christmas Baskets and the Lideres program to recognize and develop more than 500 Latino leaders in the past year.

“We are extremely proud we were able to be part of Project C.U.R.E’s efforts to bring the First Lady of Mexico to Denver,” Cardenas said. He added that as a result of the First Ladies’ Luncheon event, Project C.U.R.E. will be able to send approximately $2 million in medical supplies to Mexico this spring.
