Brewery news

John Smith's is marking the 250th anniversary of brewing in Tadcaster with a range of events and activities that will encourage staff, customers and beer drinkers in Yorkshire to celebrate this milestone achievement, Yorkshire Evening Post published April 1.

Records show that Tadcaster's links with commercial brewing began in 1758 when Backhouse and Hartley set up the brewhouse that was later acquired by John Smith, the eponymous creator of the popular brew.

Plans to commemorate the region's time honoured brewing traditions include the production of a series of commemorative ales and a search for 250 John Smith namesakes who will be invited to a 'Cake and Ale' birthday party at the brewery in Tadcaster.

John Smith's employees will also be taking part in the South Pennine Challenge in May to raise money for both the John Smith's Lion Heart Fund and other nominated charities.
