Barley news

Dutch beer giant Heineken plans to produce about 15 thousand tonnes of malting barley in Belarus’ Gomel region in 2011, up 150% on the year, Black Sea Grain cited a company press release last week.

The brewery will cooperate with 49 farms of the region. This year, Heineken will be using Philadelphia and Sebastian varieties.

Last year’s unfavourable weather conditions affected Belarusian barley harvest, and Heineken had to reduce procurement volumes. Nevertheless, the brewer managed to provide enough barley for its production in Belarus, it is reported.

The company works in Belarus using its own raw materials only.

Heineken started cultivating barley in Belarus in 2008.
