Brewery news

Bell’s Brewery in Comstock Township has been awarded a $220,000 Community Development Block Grant to help expand and create 22 new jobs over two years.

Michael Pohnl, fund manager for the Michigan Stragegic Fund, sent Comstock Township Supervisor Tim Hudson a letter last month, informing him of the grant award.

The township last January had submitted a grant application to the state on behalf of Bell's.

Bell’s Production Manager John Mallett explained that the company wants to construct a new brew house, provide for additional fermentation, expand its water capacity and create an employee care area at its Krum Avenue location in Galesburg.

To do so, sewer and water lines must be moved to the east and south of the existing property.

Bell’s now employs 63 people in the township and company projections are that the work force would grow to 85 within two to five years after infrastructure improvements and construction projects are completed.

Mallett said Bell’s will provide a $90,000 match to the grant.
