The UK Malting Barley Committee has held its Spring 2011 meeting to discuss the progress of new varieties within the testing system.

The outcome was the promotion of Winsome and Propino to Full Approval for brewing use and the promotion to Provisional Approval 1 of Shuffle and Moonshine for brewing and malt distilling use.

There were three removals from the Approved list – Westminster, Publican and Decanter.

The updated IBD Approved List for 2012, incorporating the changes described above, is as follows:


Brewing use
Winter varieties with full approval: Pearl, Flagon, Cassata, Winsome
Spring varieties with full approval: Optic, NFC Tipple, Quench, Concerto, Propino
Spring varieties with provisional approval 1: Shuffle, Moonshine

Malt distilling use
Winter varieties with full approval: none
Spring varieties with full approval: Optic, Oxbridge, Belgravia, Concerto
Spring varieties with provisional approval 1: Shuffle, Moonshine

Grain distilling use
Winter varieties with full approval: none
Spring varieties with full approval: Belgravia, Forensic
