Brewery news

A new brewery is on the way to a town south of Boston, and it will embrace some historical pieces of the neighborhood. Untold Brewing is under construction at 6 Old Country Wy. in Scituate, with a few hurdles left to clear before opening later this year, Eater Boston reported on May 16.

The brewery is the work of brewer and founder Matt Elder, co-founder and head brewer Kyle Hansen, and co-founder and marketing director Kristin Greene. The Untold Brewing team began the buildout of the brewery last fall and has come a long way since then: from pouring the foundation to raising the roof on the production space and relocating the frame of Scituate’s South Main Street School to the property, where it will serve as the brewery’s taproom, as the Boston Business Journal reported last year. The 165-year-old building underwent restorations to preserve some of the original classroom and renovations to accommodate beer drinkers. The schoolhouse section will be connected to the production building, which will house an extension of the taproom, including a bar with 12 taps, additional seating, and a seasonal outdoor patio.

Down the line, Untold plans to bring food, music, art, and community events into the taproom space. Tasks that remain include installing brewing equipment, finishing the taproom, and then brewing the beer.

The name for the brewery is taken from a line in a poem by Maya Angelou that reads: “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”

“I believe most people have an unfulfilled goal — an untold story — inside them, dying to be revealed,” Elder wrote in a blog post on the brewery’s website. For him, the untold story involved brewing beer, and after he became a brewer a few years ago, he worked at Seattle’s Georgetown Brewing Company before returning to his hometown of Scituate to start Untold Brewing. While the brewery has yet to share specifics on the kinds of beers it will serve, the overall goal is to produce beers the team loves to drink, including IPAs, pale ales, stouts, and porters, all the while ensuring that all of the beers live up to the high standards Untold has set for itself.
