Brewery news

A new brewery is coming to downtown Silver Spring, according to reports. Astrolabe Brewing will become the city's second brewery and will open this upcoming January, the Patch reported on June 30.

“It’s a great location for a brewery just outside D.C.,” co-owner Emma Whelan told Bethesda Magazine. “With Denizens [Brewing Co.] as the only brewery in the Silver Spring area, we just see it as a great place to build a small brew scene.”

Whelan is U.K.-born and opening Astrolabe Brewing with native New Zealander Matt Cronin. Whelan calls their business venture a "real American story" of immigrants starting a business in the U.S.

Astrolabe Brewing will take up a 5,800-square-foot space at the former Joe's Record Paradise at 8216 Georgia Ave. They plan to have a tap room, patio and a production brewery in the back.

Cronin will oversee the brewing, and plans to offer an impressive selection of IPAs, saisons, lagers and pilsners.

“I don’t discriminate,” Cronin told Bethesda Magazine. “I’m always on the hunt to see how we can make this better and cater it to what our customers would like.”

The brewery will also serve cheese selections, appetizers and snacks. Residents can even expect authentic savory pies, a delicacy in both Great Britain and New Zealand.

“It should be a great place to enjoy beer; it’s a great kind of town,” Cronin said. “We’re excited to be part of the mix.”
