The Virginia beer scene is continuing to grow.

Three Notch'd Brewing Company opened Central Virginia's first sour house on Friday, November 24, in Charlottesville, WHSV reported.

There are few breweries in the country that specialize in sour beer.

"We're one of the few places in the state and even in the country that has a designated facility to play with these microorganisms," said Head Brewer Brian Martin.

At the original Grady Street location, the sour house is kicking off with 11 new beers.

The beer is aged in wine barrels. Depending on the style and what happens in the wood these barrels will take anywhere from three months to three years to mature.

"You don't find that often, outside one small region in Belgium," said Martin.
