Austria: Trumer Pils has won the 2004 European Beer Star Gold Medal for best German-Style Pilsner. This is an extraordinary achievement, winning against all German and international competitors in a category that represents the most popular style of the region (Bavaria) where the competition was held, Business Wire posted on December 7. The competition was organized by the Association of Small and Independent Breweries in Europe, the German Association of Privately Owned Breweries and the World Brewing Academy of Europe. The test focused on taste sensory attributes in the context of each style, awarding highest honors to the beer with the best quality and taste. In total, there were 272 beers entered in the competition with a total of 120 breweries representing 14 countries from around the world. Of 50 different beers entered in the German-Style Pilsner category, Trumer Pils won the gold.

Trumer Pils is a traditional European Pilsner brewed to the exacting standards of Salzburg's 400 year-old Trumer Brauerei, and also at its sister brewery which recently opened in Berkeley, California. It has a creamy head, effervescent mouthfeel and a slightly hoppy nose that gives way to a crisp, dry finish. Trumer Pils is brewed using the finest barley malt from Germany and Austria, upper Austrian hops and Hallertauer Aroma hops, giving the pilsner a crisp bitter note. Trumer Pils has 26 IBUs and is 4.9% alcohol by volume.

Roland Demleitner, Managing Director of the Association of Small and Independent breweries in Europe, pointed out that the contest gives the global public "...the opportunity to discover the almost infinite variety of great independent brewers, and the wealth in regards to taste ... it shows that unique, pure great beers with character could be found anywhere in the world."

"There are so many great beers from Europe's small, independent brewers that we hope these awards will enlighten the world to our passion for quality brewing," said Axel Kiesbye, Trumer Brauerei Salzburg's Master Brewer.

The Trumer Brauerei Salzburg and Trumer Brauerei Berkeley make up a unique collaboration, Trumer-International, under two independent companies that brew and market Trumer Pils globally. The opening of the Trumer Brauerei Berkeley, Salzburg's sister brewery, is a major investment illustrating the commitment to the highest quality and freshness for a European Pilsner in the United States. This dedicated brewery is the result of the Trumer International Brewing Team, consisting of talented brewers and engineers from both Europe and America.

The partnership is an entrepreneurial answer to the capital brewer's march towards globalization -- illustrated by so many mergers and acquisitions in the beer industry. Trumer-International believes being relevant as a global brand does not always mean being bigger.

The Trumer Brauerei Berkeley is owned and operated by The Gambrinus Company located in San Antonio, Texas. Best known for importing Corona Extra, Corona Light, Modelo Especial, Negra Modelo and Pacifico Clara, Gambrinus also imports Moosehead Lager, and owns the Bridgeport Brewery in Portland, Oregon, the Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, Texas and the Pete's Wicked brand family.

Trumer Brauerei is a 400-year-old craft brewery located just outside Salzburg, Austria. Owned by the Sigl family since 1775, today the Brauerei is run by Josef Sigl VII, who carefully carries on the traditional brewing methods of his family.
