Brewery News
Russia & Belarus: Baltika intends to set up a joint venture in Belarus

Baltika, a major Russian brewery, is ready to look at proposals from the Belarus authorities and private companies about setting up a joint venture, Baltika President Anton Artemyev told Interfax in a phone interview May 12.

"It is too early to talk about this [setting up a joint venture], the company is in discussions about the issue. But, we are, nevertheless, ready to look at proposals from authorities and private companies," Artemyev said.

The Baltika president is taking part in the Days of the North-West Federal District event in Belarus. "One of the aims of the trip is to look more closely at the Belarus brewery market," he said. "I can already say that companies in Belarus and the entire market have good potential in my opinion. Better quality equipment can be observed and as a result a better quality product," Artemyev said.

Baltika considers the Krinitsa debt problem be fully settled, he said. The Belarusian brewery received a $10 million loan from Baltika in the summer of 2001 to upgrade equipment with the aim of later ...

Bulgaria: Beer contributes 127 million euro to Bulgarian economy

Total tax revenue for the Bulgarian government from the production and consumption of beer is estimated at around 93 mln euro a year, says an Ernst&Young survey of the employment, value added and tax contributions made by beer to the European economy, Dnevnic announced May 15.

Further total VAT revenues are estimated at 59 million euro (33 mln euro on beer sold on-trade) and workers whose job can be attributed to the production and consumption of beer pay a total direct personal tax of around 10 mln euro, said the report.

The Bulgarian brewing sector has been modernised rapidly in recent years. To a large extent this explains the high productivity of this sector and its employees. With only a 6% share in total employment from the production and sale of beer, the brewing sector accounts for just over 40% of total value added generated due to the production and sale of beer, said Ernst&Young.
The total contribution of the brewing sector to the Bulgarian economy - directly and indirectly, is estimated at around 127 mln euro.

The Bulgarian beer market is one of the smallest in Eastern Europe, but has shown increasing volumes in recent years. Total market volume is estimated to ...

World: Winds of change blowing in the beer industry

All large international brewing concerns published excellent profit figures for 2005, analyst deducted in a recent report. Nevertheless many of them, being confronted by stagnant or declining beer sales in the developed countries of Western Europe and North America, try to reduce further the cost of their operations.

Outstanding examples are the closure of Carlsberg's original Copenhagen brewhouse and InBev's formation of centralized service offices in Eastern Europe at the expense of hundreds of jobs in the West. Shareholders' satisfaction and with it the defense against take-overs by others or the will to expand have become common place in the brewing industry just as much as in many other industries of the world.

During past years brewers became accustomed to cut rather regularly the cost of their raw material procurement. In the malt sector there were three major reasons for the decline of prices: the power of the mighty brewers against a weak defense of too many and comparatively small maltsters, the overcapacities existing in the malting industries, and last not least, depressed prices of malting barley because of continuously abundant supplies.

Japan: Asahi Breweries to set up 5th beer plant in China

Asahi Breweries will invest 4 billion yen (US$36 million; Јб28 million) to build a new plant in China amid intensifying competition in China's beer market, the world's biggest, The China Post posted Sunday, May 14.

The plant, to be built in the southern city of Huzhou in Zhejiang province, will start production in May 2007 with an annual production capacity of 100,000 kiloliters (26 million gallons), Japan's business daily Nihon Keizai said.

That would increase the company's total annual beer production in China by 15 percent to 770,000 kiloliters (200 million gallons), the largest among Japanese breweries in China, the paper said, without citing sources.

Officials at Asahi were not available for comment Sunday.

Asahi, which has the largest share in Japan's beer market, aims to increase beer sales to 740,000 kiloliters (192 million gallons) a year in 2007, up 26 percent from 2005, the paper said.

The paper said that the China's beer market became the world's largest in 2003 surpassing the U.S. and major beer companies such as Belgian-Brazilian brewer InBev and American company Anheuser-Busch are expanding businesses in China.

Canada: Sleeman Breweries for sale

Sleeman Breweries Ltd., the biggest beermaker based in Canada, said that it may sell itself after the chief executive officer of bigger rival InBev NV said the Ontario brewer is examining a transaction, Bloomberg announced May 12.

The brewer, based in Guelph, Ontario, "believes it is appropriate to undertake a comprehensive review of all our strategic and financial options," Chief Executive Officer John Sleeman said in a statement. There is no guarantee of a transaction, which may include a sale or merger, the brewer said.

The company's shares rose 15 percent, the most in almost seven years, before being halted May 12 after InBev CEO Carlos Brito said “Sleeman is putting the company for sale'' during a conference call for InBev's first-quarter results. Sleeman has a market value of about C$195 million ($176 million), based on yesterday's closing stock price.

Christopher Fernyc, who holds about 830,000 Sleeman shares among the equivalent of $1.08 billion he oversees at Bissett Investment Management in Calgary, said before Sleeman's announcement that a sale “wouldn't surprise'' him.

"They are getting squeezed on both sides" by competition from smaller discount brewers such as Lakeport Brewing Income Fund and larger companies including Molson Coors Brewing Co., Fernyc said ...

Australia: ABB Grain re-estimates barley pool indicators

ABB Grain Ltd has release May 16 its reviewed gross barley pool indicators for 2005/2006 and had left its price estimates unchanged.

ABB Grain’s General Manager Marketing, Nigel Officer, said the estimates had remained steady despite recent upward currency movements in the Australian dollar, which had seen it rise to almost 78c against the greenback.

Current gross estimates are as follows:

Victorian and east coast pools - 2005/2006 season
Victorian No. 1 malting (closed October 31) - A$191/tonne
Victorian No.1 feed (closed October 31) - A$168/tonne
East coast (Vic, NSW & Qld) No.2 malting (closed January 24) - A$186/tonne
East coast (Vic, NSW & Qld) No.2 feed (closed January 24) -A$163/tonne
East coast (Vic, NSW & Qld) No.3 malting (opened January 24) - A$168/tonne
East coast (Vic, NSW & Qld) No.3 feed (opened January 24) - A$150/tonne

A $5/t premium also applies to Baudin and Sloop malting varieties for 2005/2006 although this is the last season that premium will apply.

World: USDA projects 2006/07 figures on barley

Global barley trade is forecasted by the Foreign Agricultural Service of the United States Department of Agriculture in its 15 May released “Grain: World Markets and Trade” Circular to drop in 2006/07 nearly a million tons as a result of reduced demand in North African markets.

Barley and forage crops in Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria are estimated to be very large, and imports are consequently forecast to fall by nearly two-thirds. Among exporters, Canada is expected to reduce shipments as production is forecast to be the smallest in 4 years. Meanwhile, supplies in Australia and EU-25 are estimated to be large and exports steady. For the Black Sea region, although barley crops are expected to be up slightly in Russia and Ukraine, higher feeding in the face of smaller wheat crops will likely constrain any growth in exports.

The report highlights a projection of the world barley production and consumption worth respectively 143,443 and 144,075 thousand metric tons. It consecutively forecasts the regional barley imports for EU to 350 thousand metric tons, 400 thousand metric tons for North America, 535 thousand metric tons for Latin America and 3800 thousand metric tons for East Asia. Production is designed to attain respectively ...

Czech Republic: Hop-growing area declining in Czech Republic

Hops are grown on 5,640 hectares in the Czech Republic this year, a fall of 212 ha on the year, and the hop-growing area has decreased by 635 ha since 2000, Zdenek Rosa from the hop growers association told CTK May 15.

Hop field renovation is costly, hop growers lack money and subsidies are missing, said Rosa.

"Areas planted with hops were smaller 135 years ago. In 1871, there were 5,300 ha of hop fields in Bohemia and areas have expanded since that time," Rosa said.

In 1993, there were 10,547 ha of hop fieds, the highest figure, and since that time the hop-growing area has declined by 48 percent.

Almost a half of hop plants is older than 15 years, three years above the ideal average.

It costs about CZK 500,000-700,000 to build one hectare of a new hop field.

Higher subsidies are needed to stop the fall of the hop-growing area. Hop growers believe EU money will be drawn to boost hop growing in the Czech Republic between 2007 and 2013, said Rosa.

Czech hop harvest amounted to 7,831.2 tonnes last year, a year –to-year rise of 24 percent from 6,310 tonnes, with yield at 1.38 tonnes per hectare, while in 2004 it was 0.3 ...

The effect of storage conditions on post-harvest maturation and maltability of barley
Rainer Reuss1, Julie Cassells, Jane Green, Tracy Willis1, Ralph Nischwitz 1 CSIRO, GPO Box 1700, Canberra, ACT, 2601. Julie.Cassells@csiro.au. www.csiro.au. 2 Barrett Burston Malting Co., 15 Gough Street, Richmond, Victoria 3121 nischwitz@bbmalt.com.au

Abstract:
Storage conditions have a major influence on the rate at which dormancy breakdown occurs. The rate of breakdown depends mainly on grain moisture content, storage temperature, storage time and the characteristics of individual batches of barley. Data presented in this paper are a significant addition to the existing knowledge on post harvest maturation of Australian malting barley. Germination of Gairdner and Sloop increased at low moisture content (mc) at storage temperatures above 20oC, as water sensitivity progressively broke down. In contrast, Grimmett germination declined under similar conditions. Stirling was very robust and maintained its germination even under high temperature storage, while Tallon had to be stored below 25°C to prevent loss in barley quality. Samples with high water sensitivity and dormancy were less vulnerable to germination loss. Dormancy and water sensitivity could be overcome by matching storage conditions and barley characteristics. Gairdner, Sloop and Stirling, all samples with some level of dormancy and water sensitivity, showed improved maltability after storage, while Tallon and Grimmett, samples with high pre-storage germination, decreased in maltability under most storage conditions. Longer term storage under mild conditions generally resulted in better malting outcomes. Storage affected Kohlbach index, wort b-glucan, diastatic power and apparent attenuation limit of malt. Changes in germination and maltability need to be considered in combination to develop optimum storage strategies for breaking dormancy and water sensitivity. In dormant grain, enzyme activity of a-amylase and b-glucanase changed with storage, while b-amylase measurements showed no clear trends. Enzyme activity decreased at higher mc and temperatures concurrent with germination loss. Changes in enzyme activity were highly sample-dependent. An understanding of the vulnerability of particular cultivars to damage in storage will assist in increasing and preserving value. Barley with pronounced levels of dormancy and/or water sensitivity can be safely stored at 25° to 30°C for short periods to increase germination. Care must be taken to monitor germination during storage, and moisture content should be kept at or below 12%. Dormant barley stored at low temperatures may not reach malting quality, even over a 12 month period. Key Words: Storage, germination, malting, amylase, glucanase, dormancy, water sensitivity
