Brewery News
Malaysia: Carlsberg Malaysia announces first quarter 2006 net profit surges to RM32 Million

Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd posted a higher net profit of RM32.21 million for the first quarter ended March 31, 2006, up 35% from RM23.85 million a year ago. Despite a better first-quarter net profit and revenue, the group remains cautious and expects a "very challenging" 2006, Business Times posted May 23.

It said on May 22 that revenue rose 3.52% to RM263.64 million from RM254.67 million due to increased sales volumes during the Chinese New Year period. Earnings per share were 10.54 sen, up from 7.8 sen a year ago.

Pre-tax profit was RM41.84 million, compared with RM31.18 million a year ago, the brewer said.

Carlsberg said the higher earnings were due to less aggressive price discounting during the 2006 Chinese New Year festive period and lower marketing expenditure.

On the current year prospects, it said the government’s move to increase excise duty had adversely affected the consumption of beer and stout.

“The prices for beer and stout products have now reached a level which is relatively high compared with that of other imported hard liquor products,” it said.

It was also concerned about the decline in sales due to higher prices, which had also reduced government revenue from duties ...

UK: Brewer Young's to merge with East Midlands rival Charles Wells

Young & Co’s Brewery is today expected to end more than 400 years of brewing heritage by shifting production of its ales from Wandsworth, southwest London, to Bedford, The Times has learnt May 23.

The company, which is selling its historic Ram Brewery site for redevelopment in an expected £80 million deal, has formed a joint venture with Charles Wells, the family controlled Bedford brewer, which will assume ownership of such beers as Young’s Bitter, Young’s Special and Waggle Dance.

The joint venture, which has already been registered at Companies House, has been dubbed Wells & Young’s Brewing Company. It will assume ownership of both companies’ beer portfolios, as well as all brewing, wholesaling and distribution of those brands.

Young’s, whose wine business will also be part of the venture, will have a stake of about 40 per cent. The balance will be owned by Charles Wells, which is contributing its Eagle Brewery in Bedford.

Young’s announced more than two years ago that it was discussing the future of its 5½-acre site with Wandsworth Borough Council. The council indicated that, as part of a wider redevelopment of the town centre, it would consider changing the designation of the site to ...

Portugal: The seventh European Union beer exporter

1.5% of the Portuguese GDP are accounted by beer exports, The Portuguese Association of Brewing companies (APCV) recently reported. This figure ranks Portugal the seventh beer exporter by volume in the European Union.

Exports are evaluated to EUR 131 million (US$ 165.64 million). Imports are way less than exports, totalling EUR 11.9 million (US$ 15.05 million). The sector contributes annually EUR 874 million (US$ 1.11 million) as tax payer.

China: Anheuser-Busch in talks to buy shares in Henan Jinxing Beer Group

Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. is reportedly in talks to buy a stake in Henan Jinxing Beer Group, China's fourth-largest brewer, according to the Chinese newspapers 21st Century Business Herald and the Shanghai Daily News, St. Louis Business Journal posted May 21.

Several news outlets reported in October 2004 that Anheuser-Busch was considering a $1 billion stake in Jinxing Beer. Steven Burrows, president and chief executive of Anheuser-Busch's international operations, denied at the time that the two companies were engaged in talks.

State-owned Jinxing is the top brewer in Henan province with about 10 affiliates in other parts of the country, according to Agence France Press.

Flat domestic beer sales have pushed Anheuser-Busch, the nation's largest brewer, to tap into growing international markets. The company has focused much of its international investment in China.

Anheuser-Busch owns a 27 percent stake in Tsingtao Brewery Co. Ltd., the largest brewer in China and producer of the Tsingtao brand.

In 2004, Anheuser-Busch purchased 100 percent of Harbin Brewery Group Ltd., China's fifth-largest brewer with 13 breweries in northeastern China.

The St. Louis-based brewer also has a 97 percent equity interest in the Budweiser Wuhan International Brewing Co. Ltd., a joint venture that owns and operates ...

Japan: Asahi Breweries focuses on beer-like brands

Asahi Breweries Ltd. aims to strengthen its low-malt and no-malt beer categories, its new president said May 23, as Japan's biggest beer maker faces the imminent threat of losing the top spot to second-ranked Kirin Brewery Co., Reuters informed the same day.

President Hitoshi Ogita, who took the helm at the end of March after heading the group's soft drink unit, Asahi Soft Drinks Co. , said costs may rise but the company targeted an operating profit margin of 7-8 percent in the mid to long term with higher sales.

It had forecast a margin of 7 percent in 2006.

"By creating new products or improving the current ones, we have to be the top brand in the happoshu and beer-like drink categories where other companies currently outdo us," Ogita, 64, told Reuters in an interview. "Otherwise our domestic alcohol business will have no future."

It would be a shift of strategy for Asahi, which has poured resources to its flagship Super Dry, a brand that holds nearly half of the domestic market for regular beer.

In January-March Kirin's total beer sales surpassed Asahi's for the first time in six years at 38.4 percent to 36 percent due to the popularity ...

Poland: TV refrain from beer adverts during Pope’s visit

Beer adverts will reportedly be banned from Polish television this week when the Pope visits, the Warsaw Business Journal informed May 22.

Polish viewers may find a rather more refrained variety of programmes and adverts served up during the visit of Pope Benedict – which begins May 25.

Broadcasters have apparently banned the promotion of 'inappropriate products' as well as any ads which rely on sexual innuendo.

The three state-run TV channels have asked to vet any material due to be shown during the tour.

“There is always the risk that the faithful may feel hurt if programming devoted to the Pope's visit is interrupted by frivolous ads,” said Zbigniew Badziak, head of advertising at the state network.

Viewers will not see commercials for beer or underwear, nor are they likely to see TV spots advertising bras, sanitary towels or contraception. Admirers of young, beautiful bodies will also be disappointed, as there will probably be no nudity shown during the Pope's visit.

TVP claims that the self-censorship was not motivated by pressure from politicians or the Church, but out of "respect for the sublime character of the religious event." A similar policy was undertaken during the pilgrimages of the late Pope John Paul ...

Barley News
Australia: Hamelin barley not sensitive to metribuzin herbicide

With the growing trend for increased sowing of Hamelin malt barley in Western Australia, growers can be confident that Hamelin is not sensitive to metribuzin herbicide under normal environmental conditions, the Department of Agriculture and Food informed May 23.

Department of Agriculture and Food Research Officer Dr Harmohinder Dhammu has reported that research from small plot trials at two wheatbelt locations from 2002 to 2004, has conclusively shown that trial rates of 112g a.i./ha of metribuzin, applied before sowing with trifluralin at 400 g a.i./ha, did not affect the grain yield of Hamelin or any of the other commonly grown malt barley varieties Stirling, Gairdner or Baudin.

“The only environmental factors that would make Hamelin, as well any of the other varieties, sensitive to metribuzin is where the chemical is concentrated into the seed slot by furrow filling due to heavy rainfall before crop emergence or the paddock is under waterlogged conditions,” Dr Dhammu said.

Hops News
USA: Totals of 2005 domestic hop production

Hop production for Idaho, Oregon, and Washington in 2005 totaled 52.9 million pounds (24.045 thousand metric t), down 4 percent from the 2004 crop of 55.2 million pounds (25.1 thousand metric t), and 3 percent below the 2003 production of 54.6 million pounds (24.8 thousand metric t), the U.S. Department of Agriculture released in a National Hop Report.

Idaho's 2005 production increased 4 percent. Production in Washington and Oregon dropped 5 percent and 6 percent, respectively.

Acreage increased in all three states in 2005. Washington showed a 9 percent acreage increased. Idaho and Oregon were both up 1 percent. Yields declined in Washington to 1,871 pounds per acre, and in Oregon to 1,560 pounds per acre. Idaho yields averaged 1,640 pounds per acre, 52 pounds more than a year ago.

Washington growers produced 75 percent of the U.S. hop crop for 2005. Zeus, Columbus/Tomahawk, Galena, and Willamette were the leading varieties in Washington, accounting for 70 percent of the State's hop crop. In Oregon, Willamette and Nugget were the major varieties, accounting for 74 percent of the hops harvested.

An Investigation on the Detection of Potential Loss of Germinative Capacity During Storage of Malting Barley
X. S. Yin, J. E. Foster, and M. Browers, Prairie Malt Limited/Cargill Malt Americas, Biggar, SK, Canada, S0K 0M0; S. Schroeder, M. Izydorczyk, and A. W. MacGregor, Grain Research Laboratory, Canadian Grain Commission, 303 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB, Canada, R3C 3G8; and M. L. H. Gruwel, and S. Abrams, Plant Biotechnology Institute, NRC, 110 Gymnasium Place, Saskatoon, SK, Canada, S7N 0W9

Abstract:
J. Am. Soc. Brew. Chem. 64(2):94-99, 2006 In the current collaborative work, barley samples covering several crop years in Canada were investigated for germinative capacity during storage. The first set of samples was sent to China for storage under typical local conditions while the control samples were stored at 5°C in Canada. Subsamples were taken from the material stored in China at intervals during the summer season and returned to Canada for analysis. Germination and a-amylase tests were carried out on the control and stored samples. Some samples that appeared to be acceptable at harvest were found to suffer germination losses as much as 70% during the process. In addition, commercial pearling tests and a rapid paper test used to detect preharvest sprout damage in wheat were carried out on the control samples. Correlation of the results with a-amylase values and the germination change after storage was studied. Samples that showed deterioration during storage were also subjected to examination using magnetic resonance imaging and near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (NIHI). The majority of nongerminating kernels exhibited a sharp interface between the endosperm and embryo in the ratio images produced by NIHI. Differences in the kernel images between the samples of different germinative capacity were apparent. The presence of the endosperm/embryo interface in the absorbance ratio image is therefore likely to correlate with a kernel’s inability to germinate. The observation provides significant insights into the understanding and prevention of loss in germinative capacity in storage and handling of malting barley. Keywords: a-Amylase, Germination, Magnetic resonance imaging, Near-infrared hyperspectral imaging, Pregermination, Sprouting
